Alejo E. Rodriguez-Fraticelli

Head of the Lab of Quantitative Stem Cell Dynamics at IRB Barcelona

CV Summary

I am a developmental and cell biologist interested in tissue regeneration, aging and cancer.

I studied Biochemistry at the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM). I received my PhD in July 2014 working on mechanisms of epithelial morphogenesis with Dr. Fernando Martin-Belmonte at the "Severo Ochoa" Center for Molecular Biology.

In 2015, I moved to the lab of Dr. Fernando Camargo (Harvard University Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology and Boston Children's Hospital), where I used advanced methods of lineage tracing to study blood stem cell heterogeneity and unveiled a molecular program responsible of long-term self-renewal

During my postdoc, I also worked together with the lab of Dr. Allon Klein (Harvard Medical School Department of Systems Biology) to develop methods to study the gene dynamics of blood stem cell fate determination.

My work over the years has been supported by many generous foundations and government agencies, including JAE-CSIC, EMBO, LSRF, ASH, LLS and NIH/NHLBI

Since 2021, I head the Lab of Quantitative Stem Cell Dynamics at IRB Barcelona.
Our group focuses on understanding the mechanisms that regulate blood stem cell heterogeneity and how they play a role in homeostasis, immunity and disease.

Mechanisms of Stem Cell Memory

Stem cell behavior is defined by their epigenetic status, which can be propagated throughout the clone and defines the molecular properties of their progeny. I study how these stem cell memories arise, how they are modulated upon stimuli, and what are ...

Epigenetic Evolution in Cancer

Cancer cell epigenomes are constantly changing as cells proliferate, acquire new mutations, and experience different environmental stimuli. Some of these differences can be memorized long-term within specific cell clones, and affect the phenotype and p...

Regulation of Hematopoiesis at the Single Cell Level

Every second, millions of blood cells are made in our bone marrow.  How is this process regulated to adapt to varying cell demands during injury? How is it quality controlled to avoid dysplasia and cancer?

Methods for Single Cell Lineage Tracing

During my postdoc at Harvard University, I worked on developing methods for single-cell lineage tracing using single cell sequencing platforms.

Mechanisms of Epithelial Morphogenesis

During my PhD, I have worked on how 3D cues (cell confinement, extracellular matrix composition) translate into changes in gene expression and cell architecture to promote epithelial morphogenesis. As model systems, I used zebrafish and organotypic 3D-...
